Screw Cap Tech Too Savvy For Corks

By Rob Gillam | Tuesday | 20/12/2005

Screw caps are better at preserving sauvignon blanc wine than cork stoppers, according to The University of Auckland.

Researchers measured and analysed the freshness of the fruity wine and found screw caps outperformed traditional cork stoppers.

Screw cap technology has already been proven to prevent ‘corking' of wines, where the wine escapes the cork seal and is exposed to air.

The Universtity reoprted that the two fruity elements, for which the variety is renowned, were up to 23 percent higher in bottles using screw caps."

Winery, Villa Maria Estate, supports the findings. It conducted proffessional comparative tastings in sauvignon blanc after 12 months and two years in bottles.

"In all cases, the opinions on the wines sealed with screw caps were that they were fresher and retained their varietal aromas much better than corks. We have sealed all our wines with screw caps since 2002 and have almost totally eliminated our credit returns from oxidised and cork-tainted wines," said Villa Maria Estate managing director, George Fistonich.
