GPS For Mobiles, PDAs & Laptops

By Manisha Kanetkar | Monday | 31/07/2006

GPS navigation company, ALK has introduced its latest GPS software CoPilot Live, for laptops, pocket PCs and Symbian 60 based mobile phones.

Travroute, ALK's Australian distributor, claims the software is Australia's first GPS software for a mobile phone.

"The software will initially be available for the Nokia N70 as this is currently the only Symbian 60 mobile phone in Australia. However, this is just the beginning of the technology," said Travroute's Michael Carrrafa.

CoPilot Live for Symbian series 60 phones allows you to select your destination with a step-by-step choice that includes house number, street, town and point of interest. Then once you are ready to go, you select ‘start driving' and the route is calculated automatically, and you will hear turn-by-turn voice instructions.

The software offers a choice of map views, planning mode that enables drivers to calculate trips in advance, and a walking mode for finding the way on foot using your mobile phone. If you hit an unexpected hold-up you can find a way around the side streets using the instant divert feature. A safety camera database is in place to warn you of speed, red light and dual cameras.

Travroute says set up is simply "plug and drive" with NAVTEQ street maps pre-loaded on a storage card. And you can even use the mobile phone's Internet connection for live tracking and messaging.

CoPilot Live is also available in a version designed specifically for your laptop – CoPilot Live Laptop 9 ($399) and for your pocket PC – CoPilot Live Pocket PC 6 ($439).

The latest version of ALK's laptop software allows you to customize routing profiles (to select preferred roads), create and share your own voice or download new voice sets – if you don't like the ones it comes with and a Bluetooth GPS receiver which now uses a SiRFstarIII chipset.

CoPilot Live Pocket PC 6 supports Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 and Windows Mobile 2003, as well as wireless devices such as the Cingular Wireless Mobile Messenger (iPAQ 6515), iMATE JAM, iMATE KJAM, and other soon to be released devices.
