The Race To The Bottom In The Mini Camcorder War

By Branko Miletic | Friday | 11/04/2008

According to a report in the New York Times, Sony, Sanyo and Panasonic keep trying to outdo each other in making their handheld camcorders smaller, faster, and of course, cheaper.

As yet, the ongoing miniaturisation of these devices hasn't affected the overall quality, only the features like wide-angle shots and image quality under low light have suffered.
This size war has its origins in Japan and ironically it was sparked by Sony with their MicroMV line in 2003.

Just days ago, Sony opened a new front in its miniaturisation offensive by releasing what they claim is the world's smallest and lightest Full HD camcorder, the HDR -TG1. This diminutive camcorder weighs in at only 280 gms and has an ultra-portable body measuring just 3.3 cms wide by 12 cms tall by 6.3 cms deep.

It is a full-featured camcorder that can record 1920 x 1080 HD video and 4-megapixel digital photos directly to Sony Memory Stick PRO Duo or PRO Duo Mark2 media cards.
