Samsung Launch Web Viewing TV Box

By David Richards | Tuesday | 19/02/2008

Samsung has introduced its first set-top box - the new internet-powered See'N'Search device designed to allow users to integrate web functionality into their TV viewing experience. The device which was shown at this year's CES could be seen in Australia by mid year.

"See'N'Search technology will revolutionise how consumers will see and use the internet in the living room in the next few years" said Alan Messer, director of connected consumer technologies at Samsung's U.S. Research and Development Center. "By greatly minimizing the need to manually search for related content and special interactive content authoring, this technology enables consumers to directly watch or surf internet content that is relevant to them."

According to Samsung, the See'N'Search set-top trolls a virtual channel guide to catalog what's on and when. It then uses that information to suggest video or web sites to accompany what the user is watching, allowing them to connect to the web directly via their remote control.

In addition, See'N'Search information can be transmitted to other WiFi-enabled devices -- e.g. a mobile phone, laptop PC or portable media player.
