Sophie Loren Attacked At Sydney Press Event

By David Richards | Friday | 01/06/2007

Italian actress Sophia Loren has been verbally attacked at a Sydney press conference by a comedy show front man who gave the legendary actress no time to answer questions. Looking distressed, she later described Andrew Hansen from the ABC TV Show, The Chaser, as a "terrible person" adding that he was "silly, silly, silly".

The online video of the incident which can be seen at www.news.com.au has been described by executives from the Italian Film festival as "Vulgar".

One of the organisers and a member of the Loren party said "Hansen is nothing more than a low life trying to be funny at the expense of a great actress. She achieves in a day what he will never achieve in a lifetime".

They added, "He had no respect for the fact that her first language is Italian nor did he have any respect for who she is. All he tried to do was boost his own image and he was not very good at it".

Hansen, from The Chaser's War on Everything, appeared in his character Mr Ten Questions, asking 10 quickfire questions which were unanswerable.

Michael Gadd at www.news.com.au wrote that Loren has been coaxed to Sydney by the organisers of the Italian Australian Film Festival, starting tomorrow.

Today she was quizzed about playing opposite some of film's most iconic figures, such as Cary Grant and Charlie Chaplin, her recent lingerie shoot for the exclusive Pirelli calendar, and about her journey as a poor girl from Pozzuoli, near Naples, to icon status in her own right.

When Loren moved to Hollywood in the 1950s, she said she was surrounded at parties and on screen by the "people who were in my dreams".

She, too, was to become an actress who inhabited the dreams and bedroom walls of men and women around the world.

It's a distinction Loren said she doesn't take lightly.

She was reluctant to name a favourite leading man, but couldn't go past her countryman Marcello Mastroianni, citing work with the renowned charmer early in her career.

2 weeks ago Loren promised to perform a strip tease for Napoli football team if they are promoted.

The 72-year-old screen legend is so keen for her team to be promoted to Italian soccer's top flight she has given them a sexy incentive.

Sophia said: "I hope Napoli win these last few games. You watch, if we go up I will do a striptease. The fans have a total passion, the city deserves promotion."

The 'Two Women' star is a huge fan of Società Sportiva Calcio Napoli. The team are currently third in the Serie B league and are in the running to move up to Serie A.

Napoli have just a few games left this season to secure one of the two automatic promotion spots - or claim a place in the playoffs.

The Oscar winning actress modelled for this year's Pirelli Calendar.

The Italian star is famous for her beautiful body and appeared topless in several of her early films including 'Two Nights with Cleopatra'.

Loren also dampened the hopes of fans who thought she may have been serious when she offered to do a striptease if her favourite football team, Napoli, earned promotion into Italy's top-flight Serie A competition.

"It was a joke," she said.

But pressed about whether she would ever disrobe for her team of choice, she said: "One never knows. Life is really fun sometimes."
