  Sony Digital Photo Album

By Manisha Kanetkar | Monday | 21/08/2006

Sony thinks this little machine will be the photo album of the future and the slide-show of the ‘naughties’. Meet the HDPS-L1

The HDPS-L1 offers 80GB of storage, plugs directly into a TV and images can be uploaded directly via its memory card slots, removing the need for a PC. It also features high definition (720p) output and allows you to watch images in 16:9 widescreen format or in 4:3.

By slotting your memory card directly into the machine, you are able to transfer images from your card to the machine with the one-touch copy button. Sony says images can be transferred from the hard drive to flash media for viewing photos on a mobile phone, printer or other Memory Stick-compatible portable device.

The HDPS-L1 will also automatically organise your photos, for example the calendar catalogue works by using a photo's creation date to sort images and display on screen in a chronological layout.

When viewing photos, either browse manually or choose from one of the eight slide show styles which come with a choice of eight background songs. You can personalise the slide show by using your own music files stored on the HDPS-L1 in WAV format, or play songs from your personal audio device by using the auxiliary-input on the machine.

According to Sony, the HDPS-L1 weighs in at 1.8kg and is smaller in size than a DVD player. It accepts Memory Stick Pro, Memory Stick Pro Duo, Compact Flash, Microdrive, SD Card, and xD-Picture Card and reads JPEG and RAW files.

The Sony HDPS-L1 is provided with an AC cable, composite cable, component cable, USB cable and a remote control.

Cost: app. $500
