  Lithium Batteries Outperform Alkaline

By Manisha Kanetkar | Thursday | 06/07/2006

Lithium batteries have been proven to last up to seven times longer than alkaline batteries when used in digital cameras, according to a recent test commissioned by Energizer.

The test, conducted by the independent US-based Camera and Imaging Products Association, compared Energizer e² Lithium batteries to Duracell Coppertop and Panasonic Oxyride batteries. Energizer cited customer frustration about having to frequently change batteries in their digital cameras as a reason for commissioning the study.

The study found Energizer e² Lithium batteries last up to seven times longer than the Duracell and up to three times longer than the Panasonic. It found a digital camera powered by the Energizer battery will take up to 630 photos, which is 550 more than a camera powered by the Duracell battery and 430 more than a camera powered by the Panasonic battery.

In terms of price, the study found that the Energizer e² Lithium also offers good value for money at $0.032 per picture compared with $0.087 per picture using Duracell Coppertop and $0.060 per picture using Panasonic Oxyride. (The price comparison was conducted based on RRPs for a 4-pack of each brand).

Energizer claims an added benefit of its e² Lithium batteries over alkaline battery is that they can perform in conditions ranging from -40o Celsius to 60o Celsius

The company also said it requested testers to emulate regular camera usage to ensure the most accurate comparison of battery life. Accordingly, rapid-fire shooting, not usually employed by an amateur photographer, was disallowed. Instead, testers rested the camera briefly between shots, switched it on and off at regular intervals and ensured flash and zoom usage remained as consistent as possible throughout the experiment.

RRP: Energizer e² Lithium (4-pack) $19.99
