Flash Memory War Breaks Out At Top Photo Show

By David Richards | Friday | 30/05/2008

The 2008 PMA photo show has kicked off in Brisbane with several new products including both HD Camcorders and Digital still cameras going on show for the first time. However, one on the big talking points is flash-based cameras and the roll out of new flash based cards from the likes of SanDisk who today announced a new deal with Sony and a 64GB card from Microdia.

Several flash memory vendors including Lexar, Samsung, SanDisk, as well as news kids on the block Tomato Flash and Microdia are exhibing in an effort to expand their brand presence in the Australia market.

Lexar Country Manager Richard Clarke has also said that Lexar will be rolling out their Crucial Flash Memory brand in Australia soon. A leading retailer visiting the show said "It is going to get nasty. Their are more players now in the Flash Memory space than ever before with more to come The only problem is that only a select few are going to get retail traction".

In the Digital SLR market Olympus has introduced the world's smallest DSLR camera. The E-420 weighs only 380grams, which is noticeably lighter than some (Sony's A350 weighs in at 582grams). Features specs will include a 10MP live CMOS sensor.

SanDisk has introduced the fastest card in its Memory Stick product family: the SanDisk Extreme III Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo with read and write speeds of 30MB per second.  The card, available in June in 4-gigabyte GB and 8GB capacities, is ideal for professional photographers and advanced amateurs who use Sony digital single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras.

SanDisk and Sony jointly developed Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo as an extension of the existing Memory Stick PRO format, to offer faster read and write speeds for PRO-HG capable Sony digital SLRs, point-and-shoot cameras and digital camcorders the Company said.

SanDisk has also unveiled the SanDisk Extreme III Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo.  "The SanDisk Extreme III Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo continues our tradition of delivering best-in-class performance in the SanDisk Extreme product line," said Susan Park, director of consumer product marketing for SanDisk's performance cards. "Our customers know SanDisk Extreme cards not only deliver cutting-edge read and write speeds, but are designed for durability – even under harsh conditions."

SanDisk Extreme III cards are capable of functioning in extreme temperatures, from -13 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit or -25 to 85 degrees Celsius, and carry a lifetime warranty. The cards also come with RescuePRO™ software for recovering deleted images.

The Microdia 64GB XTRA ELITE CF (compact flash card) has some impressive specs for their world beating card, including sustained read and write speeds of 300x or 45MB/second. That's going to be great for photo enthusiasts who are looking for high burst rates. With that kind of storage, Microdia say that you can expect each card "to hold around 19000 high resolution (JPG) images".
