The DMC-FX520 joins the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX36 in offering a 25mm mega wide-angle lens. The wide perspective lets users capture broad landscapes and architecture with ease, and also allows users to get closer to the subject.

Panasonic's Category Marketing Manager for Mobile AV, Alistair Robins said, "The DMC-FX520's touch-screen operation provides customers with a new interface that will prove extremely intuitive for image capture, playback and photo organisation."

The DMC-FX520 has a hybrid control system that combines joystick control with touch-screen operation. Basic settings can be controlled by the joystick, and users can make fine adjustments by touch using their finger or supplied stylus. In manual exposure mode, adjustments can be made using an on-screen slider to adjust aperture and shutter speeds.  Users can also set the auto focus and exposure in the desired part of the frame by simply touching the subject while recording, says Panasonic.
