By David Richards | Monday | 19/11/2007

In an effort to tuern the Sony PS3 into more of an entertainment device Sony is set to support DivX video technology.

Sony, here, said on Monday it plans to update its PlayStation3 (PS3) video game consoles to support video encoded in the DivX video-compression format, according to a report on the Nikkei Business wire.

Sony plans to download a DivX software decoder through a PS3 firmware update, after DivX completes a verification procedure, Sony announced here. An official date for the update has not been set.

The capability will enable video game developers to use to DivX compressed video to produce PS3 titles, while PS3 owners will gain the ability to replay DivX content stored in devices equipped with DLNA server capability via networks.

However, the update is not expected to support streaming playback of DivX content over the Internet, Sony said.
