In a major study conducted in the USA where technology adoption is high one in ten Americans (11%) own a HD DVD player despite the format being dropped in 2008, while 7% own a Blu-ray player. Looking at the other devices for playing HD DVDs, 9% own a Sony Playstation 3(which plays Blu-ray) and 3% have the external HD DVD drive for the Xbox® 360 (which plays HD DVDs).
Sony, for its part, claims 11 million Blu-ray devices are in US homes. At a recent Sony event in Australia the Company refused to breakout total Sony Blu ray sales between stand alone players and Sony Playstation 3 consoles that come with a Blu ray player.
The Harris poll also revealed that 25 percent of those consumers polled plan to completely switch to Blu-ray, while 32 percent say that most of their movie purchases are now based on Blu-ray. Only 25 percent say they buy BDs regardless of price.
About 21 percent of consumers said they're replacing their existing standard-def DVD libraries with Blu-ray titles, while 37 percent say they're buying new movies that they don't already own in Blu-ray.
