Dirt Cheap Blu Ray Units Coming
In the same way that white box PCs drove down the price of PCs, a new generation of black box Blu-ray players that could be as low as $150, is set to hit retailers in Australia. In the US, the price war has already kicked in with Vizio offering their VBR100 for $200. Lite-On is set to top that with a $150 unit later this month.

Earlier this week Sony Australia claimed that Blu ray unit sales were outperforming DVD unit sales by 2-1 however industry insiders claim that there is still a lack of Blu ray titles. The Blu-ray disc Association in Jan. said that 10.7 million Blu-ray players have been sold in the U.S. to date. Sony's Playstation 3, which includes a built-in Blu-ray disc drive, accounted for six million of total U.S. Blu-ray player sales.

The Digital Entertainment Group in Jan. said that a total of 28.6 million Blu-ray discs were purchased in the fourth quarter of 2008.

The new cheap pricing will allow consumers to buy a Blu ray player and an Nintendo Wii and have have over $100 left when compared to buy a Sony PS3 which comes with a Blu ray player built in.
