Sony CEO Ryoji Chubachi said in a press conference that the company wants Blu-ray to grab 50 percent of the global market share by year's end—and to make that happen, they plan to release a slew of products at different price levels with compatible disc drives built in.
Several of these products are expected in Australia in the second half with some Companies including Sony planning to role out new Blu ray products pre the Olympic Games in Beijing. Amomng the new devices from Sony will be TV's with a built in Blu ray player.
Sony has been very successful getting the word out about the high-def format via its PlayStation 3. They are planning the same strategy with TVs, PCs, and other devices. Standard-definition DVD currently accounts for 80 percent of disc sales.
The BD-enabled HDTV would be the first TV product to have a built-in Blu-ray player. No prices or launch dates were announced.
