Will Dual Format HD DVD Blu-ray Players Take Off?

By Mendelson Tiu | Thursday | 25/10/2007

Since the HD DVD and Blu-ray format wars seems to be far from over, a few companies have decided to take the ‘middle’ ground by creating players that can play both HD DVD and Blu-ray discs. Most recently, Samsung announced such a player and then confirmed a delay in launching the device – leading to questions over whether hybrid players have a place in the market.

LG was the first to come up with the idea with its Super Multi Blue Player (BH100), first unveiled at the CES Show earlier this year to much excitement. The finished unit, while a good attempt at "mediating" the format war, had its fair share of Version 1.0 problems, including no support for the HD DVD and Blu-ray bonus features iHD and BD Live.

More recently, we tipped that Samsung was to follow suit with the BD-UP5000 Blu-ray/HD DVD hybrid player, with the company saying its "main concern is not technology but consumer choice. Consumers are hungry for more HD content but are currently confused about competing formats. Samsung's Duo HD player will allow consumers' access to every HD movie title available regardless of the authoring format. Samsung is committed to making life simpler through technology and will market next-generation DVD products which will satisfy the consumer and market requirement."

And making life simpler is what it's about to look like apparently.
