Draft Standards Document Excludes Full HD

By Sarah Falson | Friday | 09/11/2007

UPDATED: Amid speculation that the consumer electronics industry urgently requires a generally-accepted definition of which flatscreen TV technology constitutes ‘full HD’, it has been revealed that Standards Australia has in fact already prepared a draft document outlining a standard of this kind with the help of Panasonic, Sony, LG and BenQ – but the document doesn’t include any reference to ‘full HD’, only HD.

Notably missing from the list of representatives of consumer groups, broadcasting organisations and consumer electronics companies who had a hand in developing the draft standard is Hitachi.

The majority of electronics manufacturers and industry personnel agree that TVs classed as full HD deliver a 1080p (progressive) signal, opposed to a 1080i (interlaced) one – a difference which Harvey Norman believes should be made clear to consumers who are forking out thousands of dollars in the belief that they are receiving a full high definition picture.

Though both formats offer resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, 1080p has a higher refresh rate and a smoother image than 1080i, which refreshes only every second line of pixels alternately meaning that the picture isn't as smooth as with 1080p.

Harvey Norman general manager, electrical, David Ackery, told SmartHouse news yesterday that he has personally written to Hitachi and other TV manufacturers asking them to cease marketing 1080i screens as ‘full HD'.
