This represents a 150 percent increase on those recording in HD for last year's entries, Sony says, putting it ahead of the DVD and Betacam formats and second to standard definition tape formats. (Though the films will not be broadcast in high definition for the public viewing.)
"It's great to see Aussie filmmakers embracing the benefits of HD and striving for excellence in the standard of their short-film entries… New technologies, such as HDV and DVD, can improve the quality of the film and help entrants achieve the look of professionally-shot footage," said Sony's Di Shepherd.
The 16 finalists will battle it out for a Sony handycam prize pack on February 18. All films incorporate the 2007 Tropfest ‘Signature Item', "Sneeze" and cover a broad range of subject matter, including drama, comedy, mystery, suspense, action and a quirky stomach bug, the company says.
