Ten And Seven To Offer HDTV

By Sarah Falson | Monday | 17/09/2007

Nine was left behind this week in the move to high definition TV broadcasts with Seven and Ten networks announcing they will launch free-to-air TV channels before the end of the year.

Ten said last week that its new channel would provide 50 hours per week of programming that would not be available on its main channel, along with 11 hours per week of time-shifted programming.

Ten chief, Grant Blackley, said in a prepared statement to the press that the new channel dubbed ‘Ten-HD' would break away from the network's regular channel "for substantial periods of the day".

Live sport, entertainment, films, documentaries and sci-fi will reportedly be broadcast on Ten-HD, in high definition 1080i with 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound. The Biggest Loser, Australian Idol, Big Brother and So You Think You Can Dance will all be broadcast on the channel.

Much of the main channel's programs are already simulcast in high definition including major sporting events -- Ten-HD will replace these simulcasts.
