| The highest-selling DVD category for the year was TV Series. |
Though average prices for software DVDs declined $1.60 to $18.50, still the sector grew 14 per cent in value throughout the period, representing a growth rate of 24 per cent in units.
The upcoming Christmas period is the most important time of year for the sector, with December accounting for around 20 per cent of the market's annual value, according to GfK.
"Over 84% of the market's value is derived from movies and television series, growing by 16% in value terms. Movie growth was driven by the strength of animated titles released on DVD over the last 12 months, such as Cars, Happy Feet, Ice Age 2 and Over The Hedge, as well as the increased product offering of movie bundles," said the company.
Bundles now account for 17 per cent of movie value, representing 70 per cent growth in comparison to 2006. This growth was mainly driven by large box sets, such as James Bond, Indiana Jones and The Godfather, says GfK.
