  Home Theatre In A Box

By Rob Gillam | Friday | 03/02/2006

The MainStageHD is an all-in-one home theatre solution that produces five audio channels ‘virtually’, thus replacing traditionally wired and placed left, right and surround speakers.

It can't produce sub-bass frequencies with any great authority. However, the MainstageHD's partner, the Substage 100, fills that role. Combined, the system is named FullstageHD.

The MainstageHD combines (digital 80 watt RMS) amplifiers, speakers, mini sub and Zoran digital processing. It can connect up to four analogue/digital sources and MP3 players can connect via 3.5mm miniplug. Dimensions: W425mm x H 65mm x D 230mm.

The Substage100 adds oomph to the Mainstage HD with a 6.25 inch woofer and two passive radiators. Packing a claimed 100 watts rms of grunt it is designed for stealthy installation under a couch or cabinet. Dimensions: W 425 mm x H 114 mm x D 203 mm.

An audio setting allows dialogue levels to be adjusted, which is handy for badly mixed movies and the hearing impaired.

Carmelo Arena of Sound & Image, FullstageHD's distributor, says "They're great for people who don't' want to worry about rear speakers and cabling and they offer fantastic performance for their price."

Cost: $1299 (or $699 each).

Available from Harvey Norman.
