The disc, which appears to be the first single-sided DL disc on the market beyond the +RW format, has a recording capacity of 8.5GB, about the same as single-sided DL DVD-R discs and 1.8 times the recording capacity of conventional single-sided DVDs.
JVC is touting the economics and environmental advantages of rewriteable data discs and their ability to be used repeatedly.
The disc is based on the DVD-RW for DL Ver.2.0 standard and can only be recorded on, and rewritten to, by devices that support the standard. A device that supports the first version of the DVD-RW for DL standard is required for playback.
The disc can be rewritten approximately 1,000 times with normal handling, JVC said. They are scratch-resistant with a hard-coat finish.
Formal standards for the basic specifications of the DVD-RW for DL method were decided by the DVD Forum at the end of 2006
