Garrett Accelerates Light Bulb Phase Out

By Mike Wheeler | Thursday | 05/06/2008

Environment Minister Peter Garrett has announced the government is bringing forward the phase out of incandescent light bulbs by 12 months.

Both the Government and Lighting Council of Australia decided to bring forward the ban to quicken the process due to the more than 4 million tonnes of green house emissions they claim are released by incandescent bulbs every year in Australia.

More efficient lights like compact fluorescent lamps are already available on the market and are an easy, cleaner alternative to the traditional incandescent globe, says Garrett.

The 12-month acceleration of the ban means that imports of the old lamps will be stopped from November this year. The government has given retailers a year to sell existing supplies and replace them with the more energy-efficient variety before any sort of retail ban comes into effect.
