Conroy Accuses Opposition Of Broadband Vandalism & Ineptitude

By Branko Miletic | Thursday | 26/06/2008

The National Broadband Network tender process is being jeopardised by the Opposition's abuse of Senate power, the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, said after the Opposition moved the National Broadband Network (NBN) proposal to a Senate inquiry.

"The Opposition's latest stunt is another act of economic vandalism. They want to set up a perennial broadband blockade," Senator Conroy said, adding that, "This is an extraordinary and irresponsible action, when you consider the opposition's track record on broadband policy."

Opposition Coalition Senators today moved to establish a Select Committee inquiry into the Government's decision to deliver high speed broadband to 98 per cent of Australian homes and businesses.

"The Government is in the middle of a live commercial process to determine the winning proponent for the National Broadband Network," Senator Conroy said.

"The issues raised are clearly addressed in the objectives and evaluation criteria for the current competitive assessment process. It is futile to attempt to make findings on these matters without assessing actual proposals."
