City Broadband Takes Off But Rural Very Slow

By David Richards | Friday | 30/11/2007

Nearly two thirds of Australian homes now have Internet access, up from 35 percent in 2001. But, according to a report from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the digital divide between rural and metropolitan Australia is as stark as ever.

Two thirds of homes in the cities have Internet access, compared to just 42 percent in very remote Australia. Broadband rates are 46 percent in the major cities and just 24 percent in very remote Australia.

Stats found that family structure, income and education are the other main factors influencing broadband and Internet adoption, with households on $2000 or more per week three times more likely to have broadband than those making less than $600.

Indigenous Australians are 52 percent less likely to have broadband access than non-indigenous people.
