  HP Workstations For Demanding Applications

By Manisha Kanetkar | Monday | 17/07/2006

HP has announced two new Intel Xeon based workstations (xw640 and xw8400) that it claims are ideal for users in design and engineering, video and 3D animation businesses as well as original equipment manufacturers.

"HP's latest suite of products deliver a compelling combination of smaller form factor, reduced noise, greater energy efficiency and innovative chassis design while delivering over two times the performance of the last generation of workstations," said HP's Ajay Sahi.

HP recognises that performance-hungry users work in a variety of environments, and these powerful workstations provide the right set of tools to get the job done whether they are in the office or at a job site," he added.

The xw6400 features Intel's dual-core Xeon Processor 5100 sequence with the Intel 5000X chipset. HP said this workstation has been specifically designed for users in digital content creation, print and electronic publishing, financial services, and manufacturing industries. Its reduction in size, power demand, heat and noise makes it ideal for power and space-constrained environments, the company said.

The xw8400 workstation is targeted at professionals in engineering, broadcast and video editing, design, and oil and gas exploration. HP said it incorporates up to two next-generation dual-core Intel Xeon 5100 Sequence Processors to power these demanding visualisation and computing applications. The workstation supports 32 GB memory configurations and features up to five internal Hard Disk Drives, three optical disks, three PCIe, three PCI-X (1x 133 MHz and 2x 100 MHz) and one PCI slot.

The company said it is "working closely" with Microsoft to ensure the workstations support the forthcoming Vista operating system..

RRP: from $3500
