  SanDisk Takes On Sony

By David Richards | Wednesday | 10/05/2006

SanDisk has hit the E3 show floor in LA, with several new memory cards for use in Sony’s PSP hoping, in part, to muscle aside Sony’s Universal Media Disc as the platform for viewing video on the portable gaming device.

SanDisk's RapidGX Memory Stick PRO Duo is a high-speed card in SanDisk's gaming series that can be used to store video, music and other multimedia files for viewing on a PSP. For a limited time, the card will be bundled with software from Mediafour that lets PSP users convert multimedia files stored on a PC to PSP-compatible formats. The card will also be bundled with the new MicroMate high-speed card reader, which is capable of transferring files at 15MBps.

SanDisk will initially offer a 1GB RapidGX card this summer for a suggested US$84.99.

SanDisk cited a research report from the NPD Group to bolster its claim that PSP users are interested in viewing multimedia content on their devices and not just gaming. According to NPD's Functionality and Content Study of PSP users, more than 40 percent said that the ability to watch movies or television programs on their PSPs was a factor in their decision to buy the device.

SanDisk also announced a 4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo Game which ships this month for a suggested US$219.99.
