  AMD Pounces With Puma Platform

By Branko Miletic | Friday | 06/06/2008

AMD announced a new platform called Puma at the recent Computex trade show in Taiwan, which includes the Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core Mobile Processor combined with the ATI Radeon HD 3000 Series graphics chip.
Although AMD has been only dipping its toes in the laptop sector by basically modifying its desktop processors for mobile needs, Puma marks the first time the company is taking direct aim at the ever-growing laptop market with a dedicated mobile processor.

The enhancements to the previous generation of AMD notebook CPUs also include a mobile-optimised memory controller and HyperTransport 3.0, and the new chipset supports Microsoft DirectX 10 and delivers integrated graphics with up to three times the 3D graphics of comparable competitor graphics according to the company.

Discrete graphics products from Nvidia are also supported on the Puma platform, and the new hardware platform will be used in notebooks branded AMD Business Class, AMD Game and AMD Live, according to reports.
