MEDIA CENTRES / INTEL VIIV

  Acer Aspire Still Living Large

By Caroline Warnes | Wednesday | 29/11/2006

While other manufacturers of media centre PCs are moving to smaller form factors, Acer’s latest model in the Aspire series still retains the bulky workstation form that some of its main competitors have all but discarded.

Take for example the DreamVision ViiV MCE Mini PC from Pioneer Computers. Several months ago, this media centre PC impressed us with the fact that when viewed from the top, it is no larger than an A4 piece of paper.

By contrast, the Aspire e700 from Acer retains the same tower form it always has, as can be seen in the picture here.

However the specifications of the latest model are well improved on its predecessors. It supports the latest dual-core Intel Core 2 Duo processor technology and offers improved integrated graphics, faster storage speeds and ViiV technology, Acer claims.

In fact, Acer says the processor is up to 40 percent faster than the previous model and that the e700 is over 40 percent more energy efficient, making it run cooler and quieter.

Other specifications include:

• 9-in-1 media reader• Firewire
• Optional wireless capabilities
• Support for two digital TV tuner cards for simultaneous recording and viewing
• Support for 7.1 surround sound
• DVD-dual drive
• RAID-ready

For anyone who wants to upgrade their operating system in the future, the e700 is also Vista-ready.
