  Government Issues New Geographic Numbers

By Mendelson Tiu | Tuesday | 20/05/2008

Telephone numbers with new geographic prefixes are being issued to customers in a number of regions (NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania) throughout Australia as the supply of numbers in the affected areas has run out.

Acting General Manager of the Australian Communications and Media Authority's Inputs to Industry Division, Maureen Cahill said, ‘Across Australia, the need for new telephone numbers is growing due to increased demand for additional phone lines and competition between new telecommunications service providers. If a number looks unfamiliar, telephone users should check whether the number is correct rather than just replacing the new prefix with the old one.'

The new numbers will only be issued to residents and business requesting new telephone services. No existing numbers are affected by the new numbers. Residents and businesses will not have to change their existing telephone numbers and the new prefixes do not change the cost of calls.
