Struggling Sony Ericsson Takes A Big Swipe At Google

By David Richards | Thursday | 25/09/2008

Struggling phone maker Sony Ericsson has hit back at Google and the G1 Android phone, claiming that they have reservations about the open source mobile platform.
The Company, who admit that they have testing Android for several months, says that they are sticking to their current offering and will shortly launch a new Windows Mobile-based phone.

Mats Lindoff, Sony Ericsson's chief technology architect, told journalists at a Copenhagen press conference last night that Google's new G1 was a " holistic" approach.

VNUNet reports "[But] to go with mass production and working with prototypes are two different things," he explained. "If you want to give every service away to Google, then Android is the perfect solution."

However Lindoff appeared to be behind the times when he said that one of the main reasons that Sony Ericsson had decided to stick with Windows Mobile for its Xperia model was to crack the US market. 'Maybe someone should tell him that this market is going to be more iPhone, Blackberry and Android than Windows Mobile going forward" said one US analyst.

Lindoff was cagey about Sony Ericsson's plans for the corporate market. "Business people are normal people. People are not all the same so we need to develop different phones for different consumers. There are different market segments," he said. "You can niche yourself to BlackBerry but they do not sell 104 million phones a year"
