Sexy Wharfedale Speakers With Dome Drives

By Mike Wheeler | Thursday | 30/10/2008

Home theatre speaker systems don’t come sexier than the Wharfedale Achromatic series, says local distributor Audio Visual Revolution.

Finished in a high-gloss black, with a leatherette trim, the units come with new aluminium inverted dome drive units, which have been specifically developed for the Achromatic series.

They also have a narrow non-intrusive 8-inch or 12-inch subwoofer. The high-sensitivity voice-coil mounted on a Kapton former is directly coupled to the edge of the inverted dome with a stabilised butyl rubber half-roll surround. An audiophile standard suspension unit provides damping, and a large, high-gauss territe magnet system provides exceptional drive – plenty to produce the long cone excursions required to reproduce even the most dynamic transients.

By using line-arrays of the three-inch drivers, bass extension is further improved, claims Wharfedale. Each drive unit is actively driven resulting in a full powerful and well-integrated sound.

The tweeter unit is a 25mm soft-dome driver with a copper-coated aluminium voice coil. Cooled with ferro-fluid to maintain a constant operating temperature and avoid thermal compression, the tweeter is capable of a resolution beyond 20kHz – and above the upper threshold of human hearing. Arrays of long-throw three-inch drivers are used for the bass and mid-range frequencies of all the satellite speakers.
