Zensonic Cables Find The Sweet Spot

By Rob Gillam | Monday | 05/06/2006

Zensonic has a reputation for innovative products that exceed expectations for their price. Its range of audiovisual cabling products keeps the reputation intact.

Products in the range creating a buzz (not the unwanted kind, of course) for their excellent price-to-quality ratio include a 1.83 metre S-Video to S-Video plus two RCA to two RCA ($50), a 10 metre ($130) and 2.5 metre ($69) insulated speaker cable with gold-plated banana plugs and a one metre TOSLink Optical Cable with PVC Jacket and fibre optic core ($40). The cables have a quality look and feel about them and certainly do noticeably clean up performance over basic offerings.

Zensonic's Greg Birch says cables were an obvious extension of its home theatre product range, though there are no plans at this stage to go into HDMI or component cables. "We were thinking of putting an HDMI cable in the range but places such as Jaycar are already stocking good video cables at quite cheap prices so at this stage it's back off the table.

"Our current range is priced at a point that offers really good quality, without claiming to be exquisite or boutique. But, realistically, it's difficult to tell the difference between ours and some of the high-end stuff."

He adds that the range was tested with professional equipment by a well-known  industry figure in Sydney who found the quality offered by the range to be "Close to, if not equal, and sometimes better than much higher priced cables. So it's pretty much as good as what you'll get out there."

So how is Zensonic able to achieve this seemingly miraculous feat? Greg Birch's response was refreshingly frank: "We're able to achieve that by finding the right sources and not putting a heap of margin on top of it. I don't know where other people are sourcing their stuff from, but we're getting ours from the right places in China."
