  Hasselblad’s 39 Megapixel Monster

By Rob Gillam | Thursday | 12/01/2006

Remember when a 3-megapixel digital camera was considered adequate? Hasselblad’s latest digicam puts things in, ahem, perspective with the world’s first high-end, digital auto-focus camera based on a 39 million pixel sensor. That’s right, 39 megapixels.

The H2D-39 is designed around the Hasselblad H2 camera and is completely compatible with the H system range of central shutter-based lenses. The H2D-39 also includes a range of extended digital features including digital APO Correction technology and Instant Approval Architecture.

The H2D-39 megapixel sensor is more than twice the physical size of today's usual 35mm sensors. This sensor holds more and larger pixels, which Hasselblad claims guarantees superior image quality and provides moiré-free colour rendering without gradation break-ups in even the finest lit surfaces. It also claims the sensor produces the largest digital files currently available for professional photography, making it ideal for the demanding high-resolution printing applications.
