Acer Aspire Gemstone Blue 8920G
Company: Acer

Pros: If you want a big flashy notebook with Blu-ray and all the bells and whistles that one can possible pack into a notebooks this is the model for you.

Cons: It is pricey, heavy and sucks battery juice when playing a Blu-ray movie. In our testing, the battery ran out just after we ran Close Encounters.

"Reviewed: Acer's New Blu-ray Princess"

By David Richards and Mendelson Tiu | Published:02/05/2008

Last month Acer rolled out a brand new 18-inch Blu-ray notebook in an effort to ride the perceived lift in demand for Blu-ray. The new model is big and heavy and more suited for home use or a corporate boardroom.

It is definitely not a portable device unless you are prepared to carry a big weight on your shoulders.

But is it worth the investment? This notebook is like the preverbal princess all gloss and brassy features and I really have a problem coming to grips with being asked to fork out $2,699 for a device that is best suited sitting on a desk in lieu of a PC. Only last month BenQ rolled out a stunning $690, 24" LCD monitor that has HDMI input and a screen that plays 1080 Full HD content superbly.

Add a $699 PS3 Blu-ray player and you have a combination that is half the price of the Acer notebook. The PS3 also gives you internet access and allows one to access movies and games. It also leaves you with change to go out and buy a $1,499 17-inch notebook from Aldi.
