Just as comedian Jim Carrey stunned with his performance in the Truman Show, Will Ferrell surprises with a beautifully poignant portrayal of straightlaced Harold Crick in Stranger Than Fiction.
Stranger Than Fiction follows the life of lonely, work-a-day taxman Harold Crick, as narrated by writer Karen Eiffel (Emma Thompson). But in a Charlie Kaufman Adaptation-type style, Harold suddenly starts to hear the voice of the narrator – initially thinking it's a voice in his head – but soon realising that his life is a story being told by Eiffel, a story that is going to end in death.
He enlists the help of a literary professor (Dustin Hoffman) to help him avoid this sticky end, and meets sassy baker Maggie Gyllenhaal along the way.
What sounds like (and is) an absurd plot, is actually very well presented. The film explores the relationship between reality and fiction in a wonderfully humourous way. The cast is outstanding – each brings the right amount of absurdity and pathos to his or her role and the result is a surprisingly heart-warming, funny, clever film that is a delight to watch.
This is a dialogue-driven film, so audio is focused on that. Extras on the DVD include a number of behind the scenes featurettes. Though a personal favourite is the full version of the talk show host interview with Karen Eiffel of which only a clip features in the movie.
