The system overcomes the need to run audio cabling to multiple rooms, thus dispensing with the potential cost of custom installation.

Bose states that audio can be streamed via radio frequency (RF) without losing the sound quality off a hardwired system. Up to eight receivers can be used with a single transmitter, thus filling eight rooms with a choice of two different music streams from the primary source and any other sources connected to it. An additional AR1 receiver costs $399 (RRP). Be aware that a Lifestyle expansion remote, costing anywhere up to $300 depending on what's supplied with the primary system, must be purchased for every additional receiver. Each receiver requires standard wall outlet 240 volt AC power.

The system's range is claimed to be more than 20 metres, depending on construction materials. Bose claims its Free Field circuitry prevents the AL8 RF transmission from upsetting any other RF devices – such as cordless phones and wireless Internet connections – and the echo effect occurring when a wireless signal plays later than the original.

Both units come in black only and measure 7.5 cm high by 15 cm wide and 15 cm deep.
