"Cyruslink LinkCentre Review"

By Ty Pendlebury | Published:06/04/2006

Cyrus, the manufacturer of many compact and downright musical hi-fi separates, has a techie brother.

Cyruslink, the offshoot that brought an excellent music server range, is sprouting, and the LinkCentre is its latest bloom. The package includes a pair of speakers plus a powered subwoofer, and the system is Cyrus-tuned.
When describing the loudspeakers, though, we hesitate to use the word ‘satellites'. Second in size only to powered professional monitors, these units demand a fair chunk of desk space. In other words, you might have to shift those dusty files of yours.
The powered subwoofer is more in keeping with other multimedia systems we've encountered in this test, and the system's neat overall finish lends it a cool, contemporary look. Cyruslink supplies a teeny but useful remote, plus the subwoofer has a USB in, as well as a line-in socket.
Make space for the speakers, though, and they repay you with brilliant sound. The 9cm drivers combine beautifully with the sub to deliver a dynamic presentation, which – in true Cyrus style – rattles along with excellent timing.
Vocals, helped by the speakers' greater weight, sound better than many other sub-$600 systems we can think of, and you feel like you're listening to ‘hi-fi' as opposed to ‘PC'. Overall detail levels fall just short of ultimate fidelity, but the speakers sounded pretty gutsy even when plugged into our Krell/Naim reference system.

Those big speakers do the biz!
This system rocks, but if you want to pop it next to your PC, before you buy, make sure you have the necessary worktop space. Elsewhere in the house, it's more than welcome.
