Philips Recall Plasma TV's That Burst Into Flames

By David Richards | Friday | 17/03/2006

Philips Electronics who are struggling with quality control problems with their LCD TV's ( See Philips LCD TV story) have now been forced to recall 11,800 plasma flat-panel TVs that have been bursting into flames.

The problem according to Philips officals is that arcing by capacitors in the left and right sides of the back cabinets of the Philips Plasma TVs are posing a safety risk by setting the screens on fire.

Philips has received nine reports of arcing by the capacitors. The results of such incidents were contained within the TVs due to the use of flame retardant materials resulting only in damage to the TV. There have been no injuries reported.

The recall involves certain 42- and 50-inch, 2005 model Philips branded Plasma Flat Panel Televisions with Ambilight technology, an ambient lighting feature that projects a soft light onto the wall behind the TV to enhance the display.

Philips warn that consumers should immediately turn off the ambilight feature and contact Philips. Matt Moran Marketing Manager at Philips Australia said "We are not aware of any problems associated with Philips Plasma TV's. We will look into this". He later came back and said "This is a US only problem. There is no safety risk".
