One such system is the Oasis GT600, which manufacturer Nubian claims can save up to 400 litres per day in the average four-person household.
The GT600 works by taking the greywater from baths, showers, laundries and hand basins and converting it to water suitable for garden irrigation, toilet flushing, clothes washing and car washing.
This is achieved via a three-step process. The first step removed lint, hair and other particles, then contaminants are removed through absorption and filtration, then the water is disinfected.
The resulting water is stored in a treated water tank ready for use.
No digging is required to install the tanks as they sit above ground, so the GT600 could be up and running within a day of delivery, according to Nubian CEO John Huggart.
"An important ecological benefit of the Oasis GT600 is that the treated greywater is discharged at PH 7.0, a neutral level that doesn't affect soil fertility," Huggart adds.
"The treatment process is chemical-free so no chlorine or other chemicals, which contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer, are added to the environment."
Huggart says that the treated water is safe for human consumption and can be used to irrigate fruit or vegetable gardens.
