Making cash donations, giving gifts of food, supporting retail initiatives such as charity wishing trees and buying tickets in fundraising lotteries are the most popular ways to give, with some respondents indicating that they would even participate in volunteer work such as charity gift-wrapping.
"It's wonderful to see people are thinking of people less fortunate than themselves. What's even better is that this generosity was across the board, with adults in all age and income groups showing their support for charitable activities," said ANRA chief executive, Margy Osmond.
The research was part of ANRA's annual Christmas Survey, which asks 1,000 shoppers what they plan to do for Christmas.
According to Osmond, the spirit of giving this year was rife.
