Rugby Union To Be Shot In 3D

By David Richards | Wednesday | 13/01/2010

Rugby Union, not Rugby League, is set to be the first rugby code to be shot in 3D, with all of the upcoming 6 Nation rugby union games in Europe set to be shot in 3D and shown live in cinemas.

Viewers will be able to watch the games live at selected cinemas around the UK that have 3D projectors. The games, which start on 6 February with an England vs Ireland game, will be shot using sophisticated polarised 3D cameras. This will deliver fans dramatic coverage of the series, which is popular in Australia.

3D TV is tipped to become the year's must-have gadget; however, there is big concern in Australia that there will be limited content with no coverage of AFL or NRL games till at least the 2011 season.

Austtralian cinema-goers got a taste of 3D action this Xmas with James Cameron's blockbuster Avatar leading the way. Of the 10 major 3D movies released in 2009, four were in the top 10 highest grossing films at the global box office.
