Flat Panel TV Sales Hit Record Levels LED To Be Hot In 2010

By David Richards | Monday | 21/12/2009

As flat panel TV sales soar in Australia, analysts are tipping that LED will be the hot display technology in 2010, with over 26 million units set to be sold globally.

According to GFK, sell-through data for flat panel TV sales in November and December are up by over 39 per cent, with Samsung going head to head with Sony for market leadership. LG is struggling with its new borderless TV, with both Harvey Norman and JB Hi Fi reporting slow sales despite its impressive looks.

Between the 26 October 2009 and 6 December 2009, GFK reported sales for consumer electronics goods hit $1.7 billion compared to $1.57 billion for the same period last year.

This year LED TV sales reached just over 3 million units, with Samsung taking over 90 per cent of the market. By 2013, Displaybank are predicting that LED TVs will comprise the majority of LCDs sold, with sales of 130 million representing 61.5 per cent of the entire market.

Recent research by Displaybank reveals that consumers are opting for the slimmer 'Edge'-based implementation of the technology, even if that means sacrificing picture quality. Edge-based LED TVs accounted for around 80 per cent of all LED units sold.
