Samsung USA has dropped the usual mercury arc lamp bulbs found in most rear-projector displays in favour of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in its 71 inch HD DLP model, the HL-S5679W.
LEDs are renowned for their long life, brightness and colour reproduction.
The HL-S5679W ($USD $5000) won a Best Of CES 2006 Award.
Samsung Australia says there is no chance of an Aussie release for HL-S5679W in 2006.
It is expected other brands such as Sony will follow Samsung's lead in using LED technology in DLP rear-projection displays.
