Broadband On the Rise In OZ

By David Richards | Thursday | 17/12/2009

The number of households with a broadband Internet connection increased by 18 per cent from the previous year to an estimated 5 million households, claims the Australian bureau of Statistics.

Broadband was being accessed by close to two-thirds (62 per cent) of all households in Australia and 86 per cent of all households with Internet access.

This compares with OECD figures released last week, which estimated Australia had 24.9 subscribers per 100 inhabitants at 30 June.

The ACT has the highest proportion of households with broadband, at 74 per cent.

Tasmania and South Australia had the lowest proportion at 49 and 54 per cent respectively.

Stats say households are less likely to be connected to a computer, the Internet and/or broadband if they have no children under 15 years; are located in ex-metropolitan areas of Australia; or have lower household incomes.
