According to a recent international survey, Australian broadband users are spending more time on the Internet than they are watching television.

The Connected Consumer study commissioned by IT comms company Cisco, and conducted by research firm Illuminas, found that Australian consumers spend an average of 22 hours surfing the Internet per week, eight hours listening to music and three hours gaming, making a total of 47 hours (or 2 full days) conducting activities online. This compares to spending just 14 hours in front of the box.

Furthermore the survey showed that Australians own on average seven digital/media devices, the most prevalent being mobile phones (96 per cent), PCs (89 per cent), digital cameras (85 per cent), MP3 players (61 per cent), notebooks (57 per cent) and gaming consoles (54 per cent).

And the Cisco survey found that just over a third of Australians have a wired home network, a third have a wireless home network, whilst a third have no home network at all, with the vast majority (70 per cent) of home networks used exclusively for connecting multiple computers to the Internet.

Although it is growing, mobile media consumption was found to be still quite low in Australia, with only 2 per cent saying they had used their phone to access short video or music clips, news, sport events, TV or movies on a daily basis and under 4 per cent said that they would be using their mobile phones to access media within the next 12 months.
