This deal has its origins in a partnership that began in 2001 with Optus providing all the business communication services including voice, data and mobile to St. George.

Under the terms of the new contract, Optus will manage the banks' ATM, EFTPOS and other mobile data needs as well as giving St George the opportunity to take advantage of Optus' 3G network, which will support the banks mobile users. Optus will also provide ongoing EFTPOS facilities to St. George's merchant user base.

In a press statement from Optus, Phil Soutter, General Manager, IT Production, St. George said, "For seven years, Optus has demonstrated that it has the scale and flexibility to provide commercial and operational efficiency, whilst remaining nimble and responsive to our business needs.  This new contract brings our two organisations significantly closer as we partner on projects that create even greater value for our customers."
