  iiNet Pushes Broadband To 85Mbps

By Computer Daily News | Wednesday | 17/12/2008

Western Australia-based iiNet says it has achieved download speeds of up to 85 megabits per second and uplinks at 47Mbps in a Perth field trial of VDSL2 equipment, according to a Communications Day report.
In the live trial, iiNet is said to be working on the commercial viability of establishing "mini-exchanges" in multi-dwelling units to offer VDSL2 speeds – even though the technology is yet to be ratified.

VDSL2 (Very High Speed Digital Subscriber Line 2) is the newest standard of DSL broadband wireline communications. It is designed to support the deployment of triple play services such as voice, video, data, high definition television (HDTV) and interactive gaming. It also enables operators and carriers to gradually upgrade existing xDSL-infrastructure.

Theoretically download speeds of up to 250Mbps are possible "at source". Performance deteriorates to 100Mbps at 0.5 km and 50Mbps at 1km .l Rival ISP EFTel earlier this year said it had commenced a rollout of VDSL2 compatible MSAN (multi-service access node) technology to 55 exchanges across Australia as part of its BroadbandNext network, in readiness for the ratification of VDSL2 in Australia.
