At the end of the June quarter, Australia had 7.23 million subscribers on the Internet ­ 1.02 million in business and government, and 6.21 million households. 5.66 million, or more than three-quarters, used faster connections.

DSL continues as the dominant access platform, with 3.94 million, or almost 70 percent of all non dial-up subscribers. DSL connections show more than a 6 percent increase since December. Wireless technology was on a roll, increasing by nearly 90 percent in six months, with 809,000 subscribers at the end of June, compared with 433,000 subscribers at the end of December. Cable, satellite and other non dial-up technology connections have remained fairly stable.

Connections with download speeds of 1.5Mbps or greater increased to 3.1 million, or 43 percent of all subscribers, compared to 2.47 million or 36 percent at the end of December 2007.
