Fashionable tech catches on at department store

'Fashtronics' All The Rage

Last week, Myer reported sales up 0.44% to $691.1m for first quarter of 2014, with cosmetics, womenswear and menswear the strongest performers.

However, trendy tech, known as "fashtronics" is also going down a treat with Myer's clientele, a spokesperson told CN.

Although  the A/V category has suffered for some time, Myer is continuing to do a good trade in small appliances and trendy technology, a spokesperson told CN.

"Small appliances continue to perform strongly for us, particularly where 'fashion meets technology."

Myer sells extensive range of fashionable tech Gear like Soul headphones, and health related tech including the Misfit Shine activity tracker wristband, iHEALTH Pulse Oximeter, and the Sphero Robotic Ball for iPhone/iPad.

Fashtronics, in particular health related ones  like Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch are popular with Australians, says Scott Browning, JB Hi Fi Marketing Manager, and predicted the category could really take off in 2014.

Dick Smith is so enamoured with high margin 'fashtronics' category it even set up a dedicated store called Move, located at Bondi Junction Westfield, which is proving very popular with Gen Y, females, and sales are above expectations.

Myer also recently started selling Bang & Olufson audio products last quarter, but is too early to tell sales were performing.
