The Samsung Camera That Puts The Flip Under Water

By Matthew Lentini | Friday | 29/04/2011

Samsung has unveiled a weatherproof pocket cam along the same vein as the Kodak PlaySport.

The W200 was recently announced in Korea and Europe but has only just been confirmed for an Australian release in the second half of this year. Australian pricing is as yet unconfirmed, but the device sells for US$159 overseas.

Samsung's W200 is a pocket-sized HD video recorder built to withstand the elements for filming in active, outdoor scenarios. The 5 megapixel camera features a BSI CMOS sensor and an F2.2 Bright Lens for video capture optimised for underwater shots.

The durable cam is dustproof, shockproof up to two metres and waterproof up to three metres. The lens features anti-fog coating to avoid smearing and blur, while the LCD screen is covered in its own anti-water drop coating to stay free of condensation.

A dedicated Aqua Mode automatically sets the camera to take full HD video, optimised for the underwater environment. Coupled with the F2.2 Bright Lens, and back illuminated sensor, video in low light avoids image noise.

There's no optical zoom and the autofocusing lens, but there is digital image stabilisation for avoiding blur on bumpy shots.

The camera measures 60 x 113 x 19.7 x 19.7mm and weighs 130 grams. It records in 1080p, and has a range of outputs including USB, Micro SD/SDHC and HDMI.
