The city of Adelaide is trialling smart LED street lights that automatically dim when not required and harvest light from other sources to save power.

Adelaide Turns On Smart LightsThe city has installed a strip of 64 lights along Pirie Street and Hindmarsh Square in the CBD.

At night the lights are set at a lower level. As a pedestrian or vehicle approaches, motion sensors adjust them to full strength.

Technology within the lighting units allows them to communicate usage statistics and breakages back to the council's base.

The trial began on May 16 and will last for five weeks.
